Last night, at around 3.35am, a passenger train and goods train - which were accidentally on the same track - collided in Voorschoten, Netherlands ( between The Hague and Amsterdam ). So far, 1 dead and 30 injured have been counted including 19 seriously. After the collision, a fire broke out in the rear carriage. At least 50 people were on board in that wagon.
Train traffic in the Netherlands is disrupted.
On 31 March 2023, 2 train derailments also occurred in Switzerland.
These train derailments were reportedly due to stormy winds. One train went off the rails 20 minutes before the other. The trains were about 30 kilometers apart, north of the Swiss capital Bern. 15 people were injured.
An investigation has been opened into the causes but police maintain for now that the derailments were due to the wind.
So have they never experienced strong winds in Switzerland before ?
There have been several train derailments in Switzerland over the past 10 years caused by landslides, avalanches or snow.
